"Wind-Over-Wave Couplings: Perspectives and Prospects" held in
Salford in April 1997.
This book is a
collection of useful papers, with a touch here and there of beauty,
on the main research topics of wind over waves, that are current at
the end of the 1990s. As we have access to ever more computational
and measurement capability, new questions arise, both about the
details of the flow, but even about the nature of the fluid
properties at the wave surface, such as its break up into drops and
the effects of surface chemistry. These questions are steadily
changing the nature of the subject of wind over waves. A special
feature of this book is the lecture given in memory of T. Brooke
Benjamin, who had died in 1995, to mark his profound contributions
to our present understanding of wind over waves. A second special
feature is the magnificent paper given by Sir James Lighthill at the
conference. A eulogy of his life is also included.
